Hemlock is a softwood, although it has a relatively dense grain. This makes it more durable than other softwoods like pine. The density of Hemlock timber makes it suitable for decorative and architectural applications.

Hemlock is not native to Australia. It’s grown for commercial purposes, but the timber species is considered a weed in parts of the country where it’s found in the wild.

Despite this, Hemlock timber is valued for its beauty and the fact it’s easy to work with, which makes it ideal for moulding.

We use Hemlock timber for screening and wall and ceiling linings. It’s primarily used for indoor screens and linings, but it can also be used outdoors when protected with an appropriate coating.

Hemlock timber carries a Class 4 Durability rating and is expected to last 7+ years when installed outdoors, above ground. It can last for decades when installed indoors.

While it’s less durable than Australian hardwood, the tight grain of the timber provides good protection against moisture, dirt and pests. It’s best suited to indoor applications, but it can be installed outdoors as long as the timber receives a protective coating at regular intervals.

Hemlock is one of Australia’s most versatile timbers. It offers a number of benefits when used as a lining material:

• Durable surface – The tight grain of Hemlock timber makes it resistant to surface imperfections, like scratching and scuffing. It’s an excellent interior timber for applications that receive lots of hand or foot traffic – e.g. interior screening.
• Blonde tones – Most Hemlock trees produce timber that’s lightly golden. This offers a contemporary aesthetic that’s challenging to find in other timber species.
• Easy to work – As a softwood, Hemlock is easy to work. It can be sawn, planed, moulded and screwed or nailed without fear of splitting. That makes it easy to install, and it’s a fantastic choice if you’re looking for custom mouldings.
• Suitable for coating – Hemlock timber readily accepts oil, paint, stain and clear finishes. While it’s naturally beautiful, this timber is ideal if you intend to use a coated finish. Protective coatings can also extend the life of Hemlock timber products.
