Ironbark timber gets its name from the appearance of its bark, which resembles iron slag. The bark is also highly fire resistant, so it protects the tree during bushfires, becoming charred in the process.

Despite the dark colour of the tree bark, Ironbark timber itself is generally grey, red, brown or golden in hue. Red Ironbark and Grey Ironbark are named for the colour of the timber, rather than the colour of the trees themselves.

Ironbark timber is considered naturally termite resistant. This native hardwood is incredibly dense and low in moisture when compared to similar species. These factors discourage termites and other pests when the timber is installed outdoors.
