Alaskan Cedar is an exceptionally durable softwood. The timber offers excellent resistance to rot and pests, making it suitable for indoor and outdoor applications.

The durability of Alaskan Cedar comes from its compact grain pattern and natural oil content. The timber’s oils are known to repel moisture and insects, while keeping the timber hydrated as it ages.

Alaskan Cedar carries a Class 1 Durability Rating. It is expected to last for 40+ years when installed outdoors, above ground.

You can extend the lifespan of Alaskan Cedar timber products with regular maintenance. Applying a protective coating to Alaskan Cedar helps to ward off moisture, pests and UV rays, allowing the timber to thrive in Australia’s harsh conditions.

Modinex recommends Alaskan Cedar for a broad range of architectural, design and construction projects. It offers several major benefits, including:

• Durability – As a naturally oily timber, Alaskan Cedar is strong and very durable. Although it’s classified as a softwood, Alaskan Cedar is suited to indoor and outdoor applications.
• Aesthetic Appeal – Alaskan Cedar is widely considered one of the most beautiful timbers in the world. It features a pleasing yellow-white colouration that fades gracefully into silver with age. The grain pattern is compact, straight and uniform, giving the timber an elegant appearance.
• Sustainability – Alaskan Cedar grows in vast quantities along the western coast of the USA. The trees are fast growing and have a low environmental impact. This makes Alaskan Cedar the ideal timber for projects where sustainability is a core concern.
• Uniformity – With a compact grain and low density, Alaskan Cedar is exceptionally uniform. Its resistance to checking and twisting makes it the ideal choice for architectural purposes.

Alaskan Cedar fades from yellow-white to an elegant silver when exposed to the sun and rain. The timber is highly prized for the way its patina develops and fades into the natural environment.

Alaskan Cedar can be stained and finished with a variety of protective coatings. This is generally recommended for Alaskan Cedar timbers that will be installed in outdoor applications.
