What is Thermally Modified Timber
Thermally modified timber (TMT) is wood that has been treated
with heat and steam to improve its durability, stability,
and resistance to decay. The thermal modification process involves
heating the timber to high temperatures (usually between 160°C
and 230°C) in a controlled environment with little to no oxygen
to prevent the wood from burning. This treatment changes the
chemical and physical properties of the wood,
resulting in several benefits.
Enhanced Durability
The thermal modification process alters the chemical composition of the wood, making it less susceptible to decay caused by fungi and insects. Thermally modified timber has better resistance to the effects of moisture and weathering, extending the lifespan of the wood when used in exterior applications.
Dimensional Stability
The treatment process reduces the wood’s ability to absorb water, leading to greater dimensional stability. This means that thermally modified timber is less likely to warp, twist, or swell with changes in humidity and temperature.
