Architects, Melbourne Design Studio, sensitively rendered the multi-residential development’s design to strike a balance between its heritage setting amongst Victorian-era factories and terrace houses and a contemporary aesthetic. In deference to the craftsmanship of the bygone era, Western Red Cedar exterior cladding was specifically chosen for not only its strength and durability but its ability to age gracefully over time. While the cladding’s ‘pleated’ profile is a symbolic link to the fashionable boutiques that form part of the fabric of the new Richmond.

In stark contrast to the ‘cookie cutter’ appearance of typical townhouses, the Six Urban Residences present a united front which gives way to distinct differences in the exterior and interior design and layout of each home. The profile of the timber cladding used on the exterior façades is the same, however its treatment in terms of colour tone and how it is combined with other architectural features is unique to each home. This includes the private internal courtyards which bring natural light and added ventilation into the townhouses. On the concealed garages, the timber adds to the seamlessness and fluidity of the complex while representing a highly practical and functional choice for the fully integrated tilt garage doors.
